Nekeita Bio
Tennicia NEKEITA De Freitas is a Guyanese singer and all round performer. Born on December 10th, 1991 in a small Amerindian village (Kuru-Kururu) in the country side county, she’s always had a profound love for the performing arts from a very tender age. Dancing and athletics have always been her passion, however, just before graduating to a high school in the city in 2003, her curiosity and enthusiasm spawned new heights. She began singing and won her first local competition just months after her initial performance at a Father’s Day’ service in her community Church. The following year, after participating in her 2nd singing competition, though she wasn’t as successful, she was approached by and later signed to a leading recording studio in Guyana, becoming the youngest member at the time to be added to the label. In 2005, Tennicia officially debuted on the Guyanese music scene with her single ‘You Like The Way’ featured on one of the label’s sequel of Soca albums. In the few years to follow, she would attain great successes making her a household name around the country and later the diaspora. She was crowned the children’s Calypso champion in 2006, a title she held for three consecutive years. As her curiosity grew she competed in the Miss Guyana Talented Teen and Caribbean Talented Teen (St. Kitts & Nevis)pageants in 2007 where she emerged as the first runner up and copped the prizes for best talent and best ambassadorial appearance respectively. Her then manager was so astounded by her potential that in 2009 she entered her first Junior Calypso competition. She placed third but also won the support of the audience. Her determination led her to re-entering the competition in the years 2010-2012. She became the queen of the junior category in 2010 with the song ‘Don’t Want To Be Born’ which to date is still a big number in Guyana and the diaspora. This title and song led her to becoming the recipient of the 2010 Guyana Cultural Association (New York)) Youth Award . She placed second in 2011 and later reclaimed her title in 2012. During these years she also participated and won many other song competitions. To date she is an undefeated junior calypso monarch and her titles and accomplishments sought her performing at major events around the country. She is also a lead singer in the Heatwave Band and has thus far performed with and as a background vocalist for many regional and international artists.
